Dressing Comfortable Vs Dressing Trendy

We’ve all made that sacrifice at some point in our life where we chose to wear something trendy to an event over something comfy and we paid the price for it.

I can recall countless times that I wore those pointy brown dress shoes on a date night knowing how much they made my feet hurt but how good they complimented my outfit.

Ladies, how many times have you wore a sexy pair of heels that were godly uncomfortable but they just had a way of making your outfit pop? I GET IT! We’ve all made some kind of sacrifice all for the sake for fashion. But at what point do we say enough is enough?!

Did you know wearing tight clothing such as skinny jeans can actually constrict blood flow? Studies suggest that wearing tight clothing such as “tight pants, belts, bras, shapewear and corset style tops” (Healthline 2021), can attribute to some uncomfortable side effects includes “pressure marks, numbness, tingling, difficulty breathing, skin irritation and resisted movement” (Healthline 2021).

Uncomfortable footwear can lead to some dissatisfying side effects as well, including plantar fasciitis, shin splints, calf pain, knee pain, hip pain, ankle immobility, lower back pain and more. The heel elevation that most formal footwear incorporates can lead to a dysfunction in your kinetic chain leading to tightness in several muscle groups which can affect posture, exercise form, and overall quality of life.

Focus on wearing clothes that are both trendy and comfortable and skip the concept that you have to be tortured to be fashion forward. Its all about how you style your wardrobe. I have seen many women pull off some fly fits blending a summer dress and some dope sneakers like the low top Nike dunks, which are a very popular shoe globally. And I’ve seen plenty of fellas out there make corporate events much more enjoyable by blending comfortable fits with business casual without pushing the boundaries on what’s acceptable in the workplace.

This rule applies to all types of events. For example, you don’t have to suffer in an uptight suit, or dress, when you’re invited to a wedding. Try to find a healthy middle ground that’ll allow you to withstand the rigors of an event which can last several hours, if not all through the night. You want to be able to celebrate love, not worry about dumping your feet in a bucket of ice because your ‘dogs are barking’. Orthopedic shoes aren’t just for mature adults, there are plenty of notable brands out there are perfect for those active dance floors at wedding receptions.

Relaxed fit is an affordable and practical type of style for jeans and pants that should be applied as often as necessary, they are like the bridge between sweatpants and fitted pants, allowing you a little extra wiggle room without looking out of place in the office or at nice restaurant. Gel in-soles are always a go-to for myself when looking for comfortable footwear as well as moisture wicking socks to keep the feet dry.

Instead of simply trying out clothes in the mirror like a mannequin, make sure you have the freedom to move around in your outfit without restriction. But how will you know if your clothes are not the right fit?

  • If you can’t bend over to pick something up without worrying about your pants splitting, your clothes are too damn tight!

  • If you feel like you are drowning your clothes, they are too damn big and you need to go down a size that is more appropriate and doesn’t impede with your daily tasks.

  • If you shoes are so comfortable that it got your feet making gang signs, find a pair of shoes that actually work for you, don’t fake it for fashion.

But does dressing comfy mean I have to dress like a hippie? Hell no!

Find the middle ground between comfort and trendy without compromising your swag. You don’t have to water down your style, just focus on choosing clothes that compliment your body more than torment it. Stay creative in your approach and always think about adding originality to your style. The less you worry about comformity and the more you focus on your own sense of style, the better off you’ll be in the fashion choices you make.

Being fashion forward requires being bold but it doesn’t mean you can’t be sensible in the progress because we don’t live life on a runway, we live in the real world and need real comfort in our wardrobe. Let’s save those uncomfortable outfits for that old photo album buried in the garage and let’s innovate. Stay fresh, stay blessed, and keep it DOPE99…PEACE!
